If you're seeking an extraordinary culinary voyage that marries the vibrant essence of Vietnamese street food with a modern twist, look no further than Banh Haus (Chinatown). Nestled in the heart of Toronto's Chinatown at 81 Huron St, Lower Level, this charming eatery is a testament to both authentic flavors and contemporary dining, setting it apart from typical fusion establishments.
Walking into Banh Haus feels like stepping into a thoughtfully curated blend of street-side stalls in Vietnam and the laid-back vibe of a contemporary Toronto café. The decor captures this essence splendidly, aligning beautifully with the artistry that goes into every dish. Each menu item reflects a commitment to quality and authenticity, making it a standout in a bustling food scene.
One of the highlights here is the OG Banh Mi, praised for its freshly baked baguette and generous filling of cold cuts and chicken liver pâté. As reviewer Tammy Nguyen aptly describes, the crispy baguette, accentuated by sesame seeds and filled with pickled veggies, cilantro, and mayo, delivers an unforgettable bite that beckons you back for more. The sheer size of the portions is another pleasant surprise—each dish is crafted with care, ensuring you leave satisfied.
Equally captivating is the Pho Ever Banh Mi, which features house-cured beef that’s smoked to perfection—an aromatic delight that showcases the depth of flavor synonymous with quality Vietnamese cuisine. Diners rave about the fried Chicken Bao, which remains tender and succulent even when reheated, a feat few establishments can achieve. The bao’s perfect hint of sweetness and fluffy texture are nothing short of remarkable—and a must-try!
For those who enjoy a lighter option, the Rice with Grilled Beef Wrapped in Betel Leaves will transport you straight back to home-cooked meals, resonating with nostalgia and comfort. Don’t overlook the expertly seasoned Shrimp Tacos—a delightful surprise that offers excellent value for both flavor and price.
What makes Banh Haus truly memorable is its emphasis on service and community. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and attentive staff foster an environment that enhances the dining experience. Owner Steven has been noted for his engaging personality and willingness to share insights about the culinary treasures on offer, adding a personal touch that makes each visit feel special.
In a city renowned for its diverse culinary landscape, Banh Haus (Chinatown) emerges as a shining gem—one that deftly balances tradition with modern innovation, ensuring that each dish pays homage to its roots. I tried a lot of their items and they were the best I've tried in town. Although this place serves a modern take on Vietnamese street food, the flavours are still authentic and not "confused" like other fusion places I've tried. The decor also embraces their beautifully made food. Stepping into the store is like a merge between street food Vietnam and a modern Toronto cafe. Here are my recommendations: - Banh tieu (fried donut) with sweet pork sausage: creative and delicious! - OG banh mi: can never go wrong with this one! - Pho Ever Banh mi: the onions went really well with the banh mi. The soup was aromatic and had that depth of flavour. The herbs were also very authentic! - fried Chicken Bao: oh my god the chicken was seasoned well and not dry even after reheating it the next day. The bao had the perfect hint of sweetness and was very fluffy! - Shrimp taco: for the price you're paying in this economy, 2 tiger shrimps for that price is fair! Very well seasoned with authentic viet herbs too! - Rice with grilled beef wrapped in betal leaves: reminded me of home so much! The portions are also HUGEEE The service is also extremely welcoming and sweet. Their hospitality brings the meal towards another level. Do give this place a try!
Cute spot located on a small street off of Dundas in Toronto’s Chinatown. They serve up Vietnamese tastes like banh mi, coffee and more. We used the Ritual app and ordered online for quick pickup. The S1. Sweet Pork (Nem Nuong) was tasty and we filled it with chicken pate, fresh jalapenos and Vietnamese hot sauce. Yummy. You should try them!
My first meal of 2022! We got the rice meal and Viet donut, both of which were excellent. I really like how for their mains, you can choose the protein. The grilled sausage and porkchop were both very tasty. The rice meal came with a soup side, which I enjoyed as well. It had a savoury, peppery flavour. The iced coffee is a must-get. The flavour is strong and was a great complement to the main dishes. They also sell their fish sauce separately in a jar (which I will definitely pick up the next time I go). The Viet donut is unique! I liked the bun they used. The sesame seeds added a nice texture. Overall, Banh Haus is a great addition to Chinatown. Although the rice plate is slightly pricier than other more traditional Viet restaurants, I think the price is worth it because of the quality of the food and how you can choose what proteins to add. Definitely will revisit to try the banh mi next time!
Follow @bredgyeats for more food posts! OG Banh Mi - an unexpectedly delicious Banh Mi that I'd rate higher than other places in Chinatown. Immediately the aroma of freshly baked bread hits your olfactory senses with an addicting, slightly dangerous amount of crisp in the baguette whose fragrance is accentuated with the addition of sesame seeds. Portions were quite generous too, not skimping on any of the cold cuts or chicken liver pate. With the addition of the pickled veggies, cucumber, cilantro, mayo, and soy sauce, it just made for an unbelievably yummy bite that one sandwich didn't feel like enough.
Ordered lunch from here today. Banh Mi ingredients tasted really fresh, and the cold cuts with pate were tasty. The owner (I think) also gave me a complimentary small bowl of beef broth, which was the exact thing I needed to wash down the sandwich in this cold weather. Also, the beef balls that came with it must be homemade, because they were the bounciest beef balls I've ever had lol. Thanks for a great lunch!
The Bahn Mis here are super flavourful and delicious. Photos don't do it justice! I had the opportunity to try the Betel Beef Bahn and Sweet Pork Summer Roll. Both flavourful and juicy and fairly generous in size. The store owner was very friendly and helpful with describing the menu and recommending items based on the preferences. The shop itself is a little hidden down some steps but worth the visit if you're in the area.
Ordered the bo la lot sandwich. The service was nice and the order was prepared quickly. Sandwich was large and very full, with that sterotypically crumbly and crunchy baguette bread. Toppings were generous, but I think when I chose jalapeno as my spice level, it needed more. Everything tasted great. When I order bo la lot at a pho place, it is ground meat - like a meatball - grilled in a betel leaf. This was closer to strips of thin beef, wrapped in the leaf and grilled, so it didn't taste the same as the bo la lot I was excited to eat. I would order this sandwich again, though, and I will return to try other items on the menu.
First impression. VERY CLEAN FACILITY. As a chef that’s a place I would definitely eat at often when I’m in the area. What sets this place apart is the quality of ingredients. Did you know they cure there beef for a month then smoke it for the “PHO EVER” sandwich. My favourite !!! ITS ALSO HALAL !! My favourite !! I also had the Seafood Bao which is incredible, very highly recommended in my books. Last but not least is the authentic Vietnamese iced coffee, it’s to die for. All in all Steven the owner was very kind enough to reveal his secrets to me. Genuine human. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !
